* Playing Semachi Jangdan
While Arirang [Aɾiɾaŋ] has been usually accompanied by a piano in Western adoptions, the paring of Arirang with the Semachi jandan using Janggu renders the adaptation more authentic.

Lesson Plan for Accompanying Arirang [Aɾiɾaŋ]
Grade Level: Grades 4-12, general music classes
Objectives:
· Students will be able to show two appropriate postures during the entire song: (a) grab a bamboo stick properly and (b) hit the correct places of an hourglass drum.
· Students will be able to play Semachi Jandan with proper rhythm patterns.
· Students will be able to match Semachi Jandan to “Arirang” during the entire song.
·Students will be able to play the janggu with enthusiasm and energy during the entire song.
Duration: 30~45 minutes (or approximately one class period).
Procedures:
1. Have the students watch the video in which Semachi Jandan is played (above).
2. Chant Semachi Jandan (“dung dung duck kung duck”) and ask the students to imitate “dung dung duck kung duck” several times.
3. Tell the students that “dung” is played with both hands, “duck” with the right hand, and “kung” with the left hand.
4. Demonstrate Semachi Jandan with hands while chanting “dung dung duck kung duck,” and have the students imitate the teacher’s demonstration.
5. Play semachi jangdan, using either a traditional instrument or a classroom drum. The semachi jangdan includes 9 beats (an eighth note equals to one beat) making up one entire rhythmic cycle. It starts with a strong drum stroke on the first beat and features a sharp accent on the ninth beat. In playing the Korean hourglass drum, "dung" hits both sides, "duck" hits the right side with the right hand bamboo stick, and "kung" hits the left side with the left hand mallet.
6. Split the students into two groups; one group plays semachi jangdan and the other group sings "Arirang."
Assessment:
Accompanying Arirang can be assessed by adopting a performance test during the music class. To reduce student performance anxiety, the assessment can be embedded as a class activity.
1. Divide students into two groups: the singing group and the accompanying group.
2. Have one group sing Arirang while having another group accompany the Arirang.
3. Observe the accompanying group and assess their performance skills using the rubric below.
4. Switch the groups' roles and assess the other group's singing using the rubric below.
5. Until the teacher finishes assessing individual's accompaniment, repeat this procedure.
