Lesson Plan for Rhythm Improvisation
Step 1: Listening - Imitating
· Have the students imitate one rhythmic cycle (9 eighth notes) by using rhythm syllables in oral and aural practice (The rhythm syllables resemble traditional Korean percussion instruments' sounds).
· Many rhythmic syllables should be introduced to students until they will be able to sing it out by themselves.
· A variety of rhythmic syllables are stored at the rhythmic and melodic bank.

Step 2: Calling - Responding
· The teacher chants rhythms (one rhythmic cycle) and then ask the students to improvise the rhythms.
Step 3: Solo Improvising
· The teacher chants the rhythms (one rhythmic cycle)
· Have student 1 imitate the teacher’s rhythm and then improvise his or her own rhythms.
· Have student 2 imitate the student 1’s improvised rhythm and then improvise his or her rhythms.
· Continue this sequence until every student takes a turns.

Lesson Plan for Melodic Improvisation
Grade Level: Grades 4-12, general music classes
Objectives:
· Students will be able to imitate F pentatonic scale melodies sung by the teacher or peers.
· Students will be able to respond to the teacher's musical question using their own improvised F
pentatonic melodies (C, D, F, G, A).
· Students will be able to improvise melodies using the F pentatonic scale (C, D, F, G, A).
Duration: 30~45 minutes (or approximately one class period).
